Monsoon-Proofing Your Landed Home: A Roof and External Wall Checklist
Singapore’s monsoon seasons bring intense, wind-driven rain that finds every weakness in a building’s envelope. Landed homes are especially exposed because they present roof, gutter and external-wall surfaces directly to the weather. A short assessment now prevents a soaked ceiling later.
Roof and gutter checklist
- Clear leaves and debris from gutters and roof drains.
- Look for ponding water that lingers on flat roof sections.
- Check the existing membrane for cracking, blistering or brittleness.
- Inspect parapet upstands and drain outlets — the usual failure points.
External wall checklist
- Scan the façade for hairline and structural cracks.
- Check sealant around windows and movement joints.
- Note any chalking or peeling paint that lets water soak in.
- Watch internal walls for damp patches during the first heavy rain.
Breathable elastomeric coatings bridge fine cracks and repel rain while letting trapped moisture escape — ideal for tropical façades.
If your checklist turns up cracks, ponding or recurring damp, address it before the peak of the season. A free assessment will tell you what genuinely needs attention and what can wait.
